What the hell have I been up to?

October 11, 2016
Kawaii Klaws, Life, My Life, Weekly Wrap, What I Wore

Hi friends! I haven’t been blogging too much lately, as I’m sure you’ve probably noticed! It’s not because I don’t want to (I actually really miss blogging) but my time management skills are abysmal and I just haven’t forced myself to dedicate more time to blog. But recently I kind of had a mini epiphany where I realised I was lacking motivation in my creative and professional life and it bummed me out. So I am attempting to turn over a new leaf and find my motivation again for all of the things I love doing! Including blogging, of course :)

So what the hell have I been up to lately since my last posts? Well, working mostly. I’ve actually been getting busier at work which has been great, but it’s also meant I’ve really dropped the ball in other parts of my life. But busy, yay! I’m going to aim to do more nail art posts here, probably to coincide with the weekly newsletter I do. I have a few fun plans to do with Kawaii Klaws which I’m going to start rolling out over the rest of the year, but I’ll keep you updated here!

Here are a few recent nail art designs I’ve done lately. If you wanna see more, just pop on over to my instagram or facebook page!

If you don’t follow me on instagram (@rockfotze) then you’ll have no idea what I’ve been wearing lately! But don’t stress, here’s a few samples of the outfits I’ve worn in the last few weeks:

In other news, it’s now October. Yay! Which means I have started my 31 Days of October challenge! I’ll try to do some blog posts here about it BUT just in case I flake out like lat year, you can suss it on my instagram! Unfortunately I don’t have anything as exciting as a Halloween wedding to finish off my challenge with BUT I am having a big ol’ Halloween Party on the 29th which will be pretty fun. Ben and I are working on decorating our house to make it absolutely ridiculous and I can’t wait!

OK that’s all for now. Fingers crossed I am able to maintain my motivation and post more. Thanks for reading, pals!

That time we decided to put on a Harry Potter market

April 26, 2016
Harry Potter, In the News, Kawaii Klaws, Nerds and Geeks, Parties and Fun

On Saturday 26th March we at the Pastel Palace hosted a Harry Potter themed market called Evening at Hogwarts. When we originally discussed it, it was just going to be about four stalls in the front yard of our shop running past our usual closing time. So a facebook event was created and we probably shared it to the usual amount of people we share any of our other events to (there are monthly artist and crafters markets as well as the occasional fundraiser event or art show). But somehow, without us ever understanding how or why, the event went viral and the numbers of potential attendees starting moving up to the hundreds. There was a venue change when it started getting into the thousands and by the time we had the event, there were over 7800 people who had clicked “going” and 18,000 who said they were interested in the event.

In the end we had thirteen vendors (you can see the list of vendors here) in a hall which has a maximum capacity of maybe 300 or so people and a rough guess of maybe 6000 people turning up to attend. People lined up for upwards for two hours, some people event claimed they waited for over four, in the hot sun for a chance to look at our little market. So say we were unprepared for this much interest in a massive understatement. But how do you actually prepare for something like this? How seriously can you take the attending list from a facebook event? How many times can you post reminders that this is a small, free market a few Harry Potter fans are putting on for fun? It was bizarre and I’m still shocked by it all. We had people lining up for blocks consistently from about 11am until 6.45pm when I realised the line was still there and just let everyone in so we could close at 7pm.

The good news is that all of the vendors did well, sold heaps and made some money. Our Ruby Kawaii stall did better in one day that we usually make at a whole weekend at Supanova! I only ended up doing eight sets of nails because I felt like I could be of more use elsewhere, thought eight sets of nails at one event is still pretty good! Ben spent a good four hours on our facebook event fielding complaints and keeping people updated when he had only come along to help us set up and take a few photos! My friends Chris and Bizzy who were only meant to come for a couple of hours to serve/set up were there the whole day without rest. Thanks again, guys!

Needless to say we’re looking into having a 2nd event but will be planning it very differently to ensure things run more smoothly and people don’t have to line up for hours in the sun. We’re also going to be careful about expecting that kind of turn out again, as there’s a very good chance it was a weird, once-off freak occurrence. I mean, I had my Harry Potter fan club in the early-mid 2000s and we had maybe 100 or so members at its peak, so we had NO idea a Hogwarts themed market would get so much attention when the last movie and book came out years ago! So needless to say you’ll probably see me post about this in the near future!

Here are a few photos Ben took before things got too hectic and he became our social media manager:

Nail Art at the Low Road sans outfit

October 7, 2015
Kawaii Klaws, Nails, Wonderful Weekend

On Saturday I had another pop up nail art day at the Low Road which was lots of fun as per usual. I have some regulars now, how cool is that? Sadly I don’t think I’ll be back at the Low Roat at the beginning of November for two reasons, one being my wedding on Halloween and also because I will be busy sorting myself out before I start doing nails FULL TIME from November 7th! Yep, I’m finally taking the plunge! I will post more about this a bit later though, I promise!

Now, as it’s October I am doing my 31 Days of Halloween challenge. I slacked off and didn’t post about it here last year but I absolutely intend to this year so I won’t include what I wore there now as it will be showing up in my first Halloween Fashion post! So in lieu of outfit pics, here are the nails I did:

That last pic? Those hands belong to  5 year old girl! Who was the most patient and still little client I’ve possibly ever had. This is what I mean when I say to people I can do nail art on just about any nails! Unfortunately she was too excited to keep entirely still for the photo, hence the slight blurriness. I love my job!

Kawaii Klaws: An Update

July 16, 2015
Kawaii Klaws, My Life, Nails

Hi guys, I have been very quiet on here about my foray into nails, which I wanted to remedy immediately! I’m still doing nails as much as possible and it’s still something I’m hella passionate about. I have not yet made an attempt to do it full time though that still is the ultimate goal. But I will continue in more depth after I share a few recent, fun designs I’ve done:

I’m still doing nails part time while maintaining a part time office job to help pay the bills. I think about starting my own nail salon constantly but I don’t feel like I’m ready to make the leap yet. I enjoy having a regular income that pays all of the bills and lets me buy fun things and go overseas each year, though I know I will have to take the plunge and start doing nails full time at some stage. I guess I’m still nervous because although I’ve been at it for a year, I know I have so much room for improvement and have a niggling fear of failure if I make the commitment too soon.

Apart from doing nails from home, I have been doing pop up events at cafes and bars and for Hen’s parties and I will soon be spending one Saturday a month at a local hair salon doing the nails of people while they have their hair done. It’s really fun! I absolutely love nail art and am so happy that I turned out to be pretty darn good at it and enjoy it so much. It’s mostly the acrylics side of things that’s the most daunting but I know that I will only get better the more I do.

If you’d like to see more of my nail art, check out my flickr album where I’ve uploaded the majority of my work! If you’re in Brisbane and would like me to do your nails, please check out my facebook page :D

Super Quick Melbourne Trip

March 17, 2015
Feminism, Kawaii Klaws, My Life, Nails, Travel, Wonderful Weekend

Last weekend Ben and popped down to Melbourne very briefly, in fact we only had two days there! The main reason for our visit was because some friends of Ben’s were getting married, but I was also fortunate enough to coordinate a nail art gig for a feminist fundraiser event for the same weekend! It was my first ever interstate nail art event too so it was all very exciting.

We flew in early afternoon of the Saturday where we pretty much had to get ready for the wedding right away (well I did, Ben only took 10 minutes to get ready, the chump). It was held at Collingwood Children’s Farm which is a fully operational farm right in Melbourne City. Amazing! It was such a lovely venue for a wedding and I got to pat/stare at a bunch of animals :D

How good does Ben look in a suit? It’s the one he had made in Thailand last year and this was his first time wearing it! My dress is from Dangerfield and stockings by Black Milk Clothing.

The next day we took it easy die to some hangovers from partying hard at the reception, stuffed our faces with vegan fare at the Cornish Arms, went home for a nap and then headed to the Tote for my nail art event. A friend on Facebook approached me to do nails at her event because local nail artists wanted to charge a booking fee which she was unable to do as it was a fundraiser event, so I was delighted to offer my services. It was called Y LISTEN and was held on International Women’s Day and was raising money for YWCA Victoria. There were lots of bands and musicians playing, all female-dominated and it was a really cool night. I was shocked by just how stylish the women of Melbourne can be, Brisbane has a long way to go.

We flew out the next morning feeling somewhat worse for wear, but it was fun to have such a whirlwind trip to Melbourne and get back to our regular schedule again!

Ruby’s Wishlist – A Little Bit Pastel Goth

February 16, 2015
Fashion and makeup, Kawaii Klaws, wishlist

wishlist01
Well well well it has been AGES since I did a wishlist post! In actual fact now is the worst time to be lusting after new clothing because I need to be saving up for our Japan trip in May! But these things are all too cute and evoked a pastel goth kinda vibe so I thought I’d share:

Pastel Bat skater dress from Killstar – Pink bats on a black skater dress? Ummm yes please!
Skull N Roses dress from Dangerfield – OK so I am actually purchasing this as I needed a new dress for an upcoming wedding. So pretty but with discreet little skulls FTW!
Pastel Castle Acrylic Necklace from I’m Your Present – How cute would this be for y day at Tokyo Disney?!
YRU Qozmo Unicorn Platforms from Beginning Boutique – LOOK AT THEM!!!!
Black Nailz Emoki Crop Tank from OMIGHTY – This really should be my uniform for Kawaii Klaws!
Slimey Boner hair bone from Miss-a-Ree Guts Creations – Danella is a close friend of mine and makes amazing kawaii stuff like this that I covet constantly!
UNIF Bait Dress from Nasty Gal – This would look so whimsical and pretty over so many things!
Jelly Pom Pom Bow from I Am Chubby Bunny – I have a huge soft spot for clear bows with stuff inside, pom poms especially!
Donutella Pop Sprinkles Tee from Tokidoki – It’s such a bummer these guys don’t ship to Australia because this tee is too sweet to deal with AND it’s on sale :(

Beer Nail Art Day at the Scratch!

October 2, 2014
Kawaii Klaws, Nails

beernailart2

I’m very excited to announce I will be doing a day of nail art at my favourite Brisbane bar The Scratch on Sunday 19th October! For $25 you can get some nail art by me aaaaand a beer! Yay!

Though the focus is the beer nail art, I will have my Halloween designs and a few other fun ones available on the day (only one feature nail per hand for non-beer designs though, so I can keep times down to 30 – 45 mins per set).

I’m really excited, it’s the first event I’ll be doing for Kawaii Klaws and I really hope it goes well as I definitely want to do lots of events around Brisbane!

More info about the evnt as well as the Scratch here.

Kawaii Klaws

August 8, 2014
Kawaii Klaws, My Life, Nails

It only just dawned on me today that I have not blogged for ages about becoming a nail tech! Slack! In all honesty it’s kept me so busy I’ve had even less time than usual to blog at all (and let’s face it, my blogging was far from regular beforehand). But it’s been a lot of fun and a huge learning curve for sure.

I got my qualification in May after we got back from Thailand and I’ve been doing nails from home ever since. At first I set up a space in our dining area which was good but it really made it hard to separate the business from home, especially when poor old Ben was home when I had a client. So I finally sucked it up and cleared out my craft/computer room and made it in my nail “salon”. We even painted two of the walls pink so it looks pretty darn fabulous! I still have some final decorating and organising to go, when it’s all finished I will post photos! For now, here’s some of the nail art I’ve done lately:
