The Worst t-shirts on Earth

Of all of the terrible things to see printed on t-shirts in my lifetime, I would have to say the current trend of busty, pornstar-esque models holding guns, flipping the bird or in a bathtub full of milk and froot loops are by far the worst. Have you seen them? I saw one today at one of those trashy cheap shops of a girl who looked like a skinnier, bustier version of Snooki wearing a stupid flat-brimmed cap and making some sleazy face/hand gesture. It enraged me so much, I felt like going to the shop keeper and making a complaint.

I first noticed them at City Beach which really did sum up the quality of them perfectly (ie. kind of nasty and aimed at 18 year old idiots). Then I started noticing guys actually wearing them. Sometimes while with their girlfriends! I can understand there are guys out there who are stupid and sexist enough to think it’s cool to wear an over-sexualised, trashy t-shirt featuring the kind of girl who a) would never ever hook up with them and b) give wristies to security guards to get backstage at gigs. Basically, the kind of guy who reads magazines like Zoo Weekly, Nuts or Ralph and thinks the girls are hot as and can’t ever settle for a normal girl because her boobs aren’t the size of watermelons while she’s about a size 6 everywhere else and she doesn’t wear bejeweled matching bra’s and knickers at all times. They probably also wear Lynx deodorant and expect to pull chicks like the guys in the ad’s do.

UGH! Who would want that on a t-shirt, ever? If I was the model and they chose that picture
to put on clothing, I’d be suing their arses (but then again I ain’t that kind of girl).

So, while I “get” why a guy would wear a t-shirt that tacky, I just don’t get how any girl would let their boyfriend wear a shirt like that out in public. She either has very low self-esteem, has no say in anything to do with their relationship, is really fucking dumb, or aspires to do that sort of modelling. All reasons are really bloody sad. When I see those couples, I wonder if there was any sort of discussion about it before they left the house. Did she comment on how shit it was? Did he tell her to stop being such a bitch and wear it to spite her? I can’t even imagine.

So I beg you, if you know any guys who proudly wear shirts like these, don’t turn a blind eye. Tell him exactly how you feel about that shirt so that next time he goes to put it on, he stops and considers how many people he’s offending when they see him wearing it. Maybe he’s too big a douche to care, but there’s always the chance he’ll take your advice and he’ll throw away that eyesore. And then you will have done your good deed for the year and for that many women would applaud you!

30 Days of Music – Day 3 – A Song That Makes You Happy

I am the type of person who listens to music to make me happy. I don’t listen to angry music, or any kind of music that could potentially make me feel worse than I already do. I like to sing along, dance a little, and feel joyous afterwards. As such today’s challenge is a tough one! Of all of the songs that make me happy when I hear them, I think I will go with the silliest one of all:

Day 2 – A Song that makes you happy = Piercing by Die Ärzte

Die Ärzte are my favourite band. I have loved them since I was 15 when some friends came back from their exchange trip to Germany with their CD “13″ and some other amazing merch. No two songs of theirs sound alike, and while they call themselves punk rock, they’ve played just about every genre and sub-genre you can possibly imagine. I find it hard being a fan of theirs in Australia as they’re really only famous (and I mean ridiculously so) in Germany and some surrounding countries, and being one of about four fans of a band in a whole country is a bit depressing. Still, I have three tattoos dedicated to them and still feel a whole lot of joy when I hear their music.

This song is pretty straight forward, it’s about a guy whose girlfriend convinces him to get his penis pierced which later gets infected. The line “This thing was made for lovin’, Du sollst es nicht versklaven” which means “This thing was made for loving, so you must not enslave it” was my favourite line ever and I used it on everything from my email signature to my LJ title (which I’ve kept, as a matter of fact).

There will plenty of other appearances by Die Ärzte in this challenge, don’t you worry!

30 Days of Music – Day 2 – Your Least Favourite Song

I had a bit of trouble with this one until this song popped into my head:

Day 2 - Your least favourite Song = Big Yellow taxi by Counting Crows

OH MY GOD. I hate this band and this AWFUL song so much. I’d rather listen to a million bad pop songs until my ears bleed and my brain explodes before I’ll listen to this song in full. The lead singer creeps me out with his douchey dreadlocks and weird, dopey eyes. The stupid OOH BOP BOP bits. The try-hard set-in-NY film clip. Oh god, I’m getting so angry about it all, I have to stop!

Meanwhile their other song which I also loathe just about as much is Accidentally in Love with that retarded rabbit with the douchey dreadlocks. UGH D:

30 Days of Music – Day 1 – Your Favourite Song

Anyone who reads my blog knows I love music. I love almost every kind of music and I love to share my musical discoveries with anyone who will listen. Because I have been in a little bit of a rut with my blog (I’ve been blaming my busy new job, but it’s been five weeks now, it’s starting to become a fairly flimsy excuse) I decided I would do that meme everyone seems to be doing on Facebook – 30 days of Music. Don’t worry though, I will continue with my rants, fashion watching and what-not. But this will hopefully get me back into the swing of posting more AND help you discover new and worldy music (since 60% of what I listen to is German).

Day 1 – Your favourite Song = Jein by Fettes Brot

Fettes Brot are my second favourite music group (if you don’t know who my favourite one is, you mustn’t know me very well, in which case all will be revealed soon). They’re a German hop hop group from Hamburg who I discovered years ago during my obsession with all German music. When I think of hip hop, it’s their music I think of. It’s melodic and while they are rappers, it’s easy to listen to (something I can;’t say for a lot of Aussie hip hop, unfortunately). “Jein” is a mix of the words Ja and Nein (Yes and No) and it’s about making trying to make a choice between something fun vs being sensible (ie. cheating on a girlfriend, sleeping with your best mate’s sister and ditching your gf to go to a party). But I mostly love it because I think it’s sexy as hell. Just ignore the terrible film clip…

Oh and I just discovered they released a live version last year. Nowhere near as wonderful as the original, but still very good. The clip is 1000x better at the very least!

Extra Long Ester Long Weekend

This is a little something I used to do back in the good old days of Livejournal (which I neglect very badly these days). After a big weekend I would do a “Weekend Roundup” which went through everything that happened on my weekend since I used my LJ as a personal diary more than anything and I did live a fairly hectic and fun-filled life in London which I wanted to remember forever. Since we just had a five-day weekend thanks to Easter and Anzac Day and I have been a tad slack with my blog lately, I thought I would run thorugh the events of my action packeed weekend for you all.

On Thursday night I went to my mum’s place as I am still getting used to being paid monthly and wanted to chill out with mum and spend as little money as possible. I knew there’d be people at my place all weekend since the boyfriend is a social butterfly, and I was looking forward to peace and quiet. Good Friday was fairly uneventful, we just lounged around reading, watching TV and hanging out with mum’s pup Lily who has just come on heat which means she had a few male callers which I had to chase off with a broom more than once. My sister and her boyfriend came over for dinner for a roast (can you tell we’re all atheists?) and I got a bit tipsy on fancy cider and black Sambucca.

On Saturday mum and I went shopping. As Borders stores are closing most of their stores, they’re selling all of their stuff for cheap. Including their ebook reader the Kobo which I desperately wanted. So we made the trek to the store which still had some and got one each for just $112 (mum already has an Amazon Kindle which she doesn’t like much because it’s tied to Amazon). Needless to say I love it and have already downloaded the Harry Potter series which I am re-reading right now. I might post a review once I get some more use out of it.

Later on Saturday night we went to the movies and saw Paul, which was hilarious. I highly recommend you go and see it, if you haven’t already. On our way home though, we came pretty damn close to death. A Commodore sped through a Give Way sign right in front of us, and had I not had a bad feeling as we approached the intersection and been looking for something, we probably wouldn’t have seen that car until too late and it probably would have been the end of all in both cars. It was a terrifying moment, and I’m so glad I have a little bit of ESP now and then for moments like these. We tried chasing the jerk but they’d long gone by the time we turned mum’s car around.

On Sunday morning we were woken up by one of Lily’s lover friends who the night before had found a way to dug under the house and get into mum’s backyard. He’d gotten much further than this though, and had managed to break in through the locked doggie door and got into the house! Mum almost had a heart attack when she got up to take Lily outside to pee! He was so stealthy, we hadn’t heard him and he’d managed ton squeeze through a doggie door that’s about 3 sizes too small for him AND WAS LOCKED FROM BOTH SIDES. It took us almost two hours but we managed to get a collar and leash on him, get him into mum’s car and take him to the pound. Luckily there were two guys there who helped us get him into the cage. He was a nice dog but we’re pretty sure he’s a stray and t was kind of scary wondering if he’d bite us at some point. Thankfully the most he did was snap at one of the men as he was locked into the cage at the pound.

After that we had a pretty lazy morning before I finally went home. That afternooa few of us went to a BBQ for a friend who had only breezed into town for a day, Janette Slack. Here she is having some post-nap milk (how very rock n roll, we all joked):

Afterwards I attempted to go out with a few girlfriends but due to the fact the next day was Anzac Day, everything shut at midnight. In retrospect I’m glad this was the case as I really couldn’t afford to go out drinking, thanks to my dear little e-reader purchase the day before.

And the last two days? Well, let’s just say not much has been done at all. Sleeping in late, watching movies, cooking enormous meals and lazing about has been all that’s really taken place, and it’s been wonderful. I managed to venture out of the house today to get my nails done in some cutesy colours, but that was about it:

How was your Easter long weekend?

Attack of the Double Banana!

I am the type of person to get unreasonably excited about the sort of things people ususally find mundane or at best, kind of average. I will stop in my tracks to look at a dog, I get a thrill when I find money lying around and I squeal with delight when I find pink version of everyday items.

So imagine my delight when Iopened up the fruit box at work and found the DOUBLE BANANA!

I let it ripen up for a couple of days and then when it was finally a perfect shade of bright yellow, I decided it was time. What wonders would this enormous, double width banana hold? Was it just a big, funny shaped banana, or was there going to be two perfect bananas squished into one skin? IT WAS TIME TO FIND OUT!

Under the watchful eye of a workmate who was almost as excited as I was, I opened it up:

YES! It was better than I expected, there were two perfect bananas in the one skin. I thought I was going to hyperventilate with excitement, especially so when I discovered it didn’t have a single bruise (a sure-fire way to ruin any banana experience). It was now time for the taste test.

I like to eat my fruit all cut up so I got a-cuttin’ and was presented with the most perfect pair of bananas of all time. Neatly encased in the one peel. Two for one baby! The two bananas pulled apart easily and except for being slightly indented from being stuck in such a small space together, they were completely and utterly perfect.

And the best bit? They were honest-to-god the tastiest bananas I have ever eaten. It was an excellent day!

It’s my unit and I’ll smoke if I want to

It’s been a while in the making, but I am finally going to talk about smoking. I was inspired by this article which enraged me, and reminded me that I’ve been meaning to blog about this topic for some time.

First things first, I am not a smoker. At most I have been a social smoker which lasted a short while in my mid-20s. One night while out clubbing I tried to have a cigarette and felt horribly ill. From that moment on I could no longer stand the thought of having a smoke. I was never much of a smoker anyway, I could only stomach light, menthol ones and preferably slim. If ever I bought a packet I’d share them with everyone so would only have a couple over the course of a big night out. I don’t know why I did it, I just know I randomly picked it up in London and stuck with it for a bit and was glad my body got over it. I never became addicted and in retrospect I’m kind of appalled at myself for ever smoking and hope to god that if  my mum reads this she understand it was just a phase (though she probably knew all about it all along and knew I’d get over it quickly enough).

Now I’ve passed the phase of thinking smoking was cool, I’ve kind of become one of those “smoking is evil, how could you do it to your body” kinds of people. I get completely grossed out when someone’s nasty second-hand smoke wafts into my face and laugh quietly at people who have to huddle in smoking areas to get their daily dose of lung cancer. But I never say this to anyone because if there’s anything I hate more than smoking these days, it’s the people who are overly vocal about how they hate smoking. Bloody self-righteous pricks.

So if I don’t like smoking, but also haste those who hate smoking, where exactly do I stand on the matter? I guess I am more for smoking than against. Yes it is a filthy habit that causes people to die painful deaths. But it’s legal and the people who do it are (in most cases) mature adults who understand the risks and choose to smoke anyway. You know what, who cares? They want to smoke and increase their risk of cancer, then who am I to stop that? Likewise with people who binge drink severely and ruin their livers or the people who refuse to eat healthy food or exercise. They’re all causing massive amount of damage to their bodies but it’s THEIR BODIES. I am glad smoking is banned in public spaces like bars, restaurants and shopping malls but under no circumstance should it ever be banned in your own home. Likewise it shouldn’t be banned in open areas so long as the smoker is not standing near a doorway and no blasting children in the face with their second hand smoke.

We live in a world where terrible things happen every day, so in my opinion smokers need to be cut some slack once in a while. The effects of smoking have been proven, but unlike getting wasted drunk and choking on your own vomit or bashing people in a drunken fury, the effects of smoking aren’t instant and take time to develop. If you quit early enough you can virtually reverse the effects of smoking and continue to live a long and healthy life. Smoking might be addictive but you don’t see people whoring themselves for their next hit of nicotine like they do with illicit drugs. At worst you see hobo’s scabbing cigarette butts of the street or asking you for a smoke if they think you look the type.

I come from a long line of cancer sufferers, which is why I have a negative stance on smoking (though admittedly, of the family members who smoked, none of their cancer was actually caused by smoking, oddly enough). I don’t like it and would be appalled if my kids took it up. I worry about my friends who smoke and consider it a huge time waster in the workplace. But if it’s still legal and can be sold in supermarkets and your local corner store, then why can’t people do it in a way that doesn’t harm non-smokers without fear of being reprimanded for doing something that’s perfectly legal. It seems crazy to me.

What are your thoughts on smoking?

Music on my Mind – Presenting LMFAO

I thought I would share the song I am currently obsessed with. I caught the end of the clip on Video Hits the other morning which I instantly thought was a wannabe Black Eyed Peas (and we all know what I think of them). But the one thing that did stroke me, in all of the thirty seconds I heard/saw was that they were probably a whole lot better than BEP but I quickly pushed them out of my mind. Later that very day however, my sister comes to visit and starts talking about this song she posted on my Facebook, the exact same song as it turns out. She’s telling me it reminds her of House Play and their infamous dance-off scene so I get her to show me it but due to the internet being slow as a wet week I don’t really get to watch it properly except for the part where they’re all shuffling which I admit looks pretty neat.

Then yesterday I decided to watch it properly and without interruption. Yep, you’d better believe I’m obsessed with it! Before I go into vivid detail about why I love it, you should probably watch it first:

Party Rock Anthem by LMFAO

So after I had a big ol’ whinge about loathing that Black Eyed Peas song and clip “I’mma Rock Right Now” or whatever the hell that claptrap was called, why do I like a song that at first glance appears like a total rip off? Well for one thing, the song doesn’t change 86 times, nor does the clip ljump around liek it’s on fast forward. These guys wake up 28 days after their song is released and everyone is constantly shuffling which I must admit, it about as scary as a world taken over by zombies. Then they start shuffling and there’s an epic group dance scene (where they do indeed do the Funky Charleston briefly). There are some amazing dance moves like the guy who flips off his elbow and I will be perfectly honest, I think the fashion is fantastic. I am not ashamed of my love of over-the-top sci-fi-esque 80s fashion they’re wearing and wish I could get away with wearing some of that stuff (ain’t no way in hell anyone will ever see my ass in a pair of zebra print leggings).

I also love the fact it’s all about having a good time, dancing and nothing much else. Oh and there is such a wide variety of people in the clip. Basically if you can shuffle dance then you’re in, even if you’re not a waif or especially easy on the eye. I also like the fact it’s made a dance style (ie the Melbourne Shuffle) which I always disliked but upon seeing it done so well, I wish I could do it too. I guess if the people I’ve seen do it were in big groups instead of by their drunken selves, I might have appreciated it more! It’s also really neat to see the behind the scenes for the clip. I never thought such a simple dance moved needed to be choreographed so thoroughly. Oh and check out the choreographer Hokuto Konish, boy is fine as hell and check out that awesome hair!

Unfortunately the other songs by LMFAO aren’t quite as awesome, “I’m in Miami Trick” got overplayed to death (I actually learned a hip hop dance to it well before it became popular so I feel a certain smugness about it). Then there’s “La La La” which ain’t too bad but instantly reminded me of Lisa Frank.

I have so many fond memories of Lisa Frank stickers and backpacks in high school. WHY did I throw it all out???

So that’s my music discovery for the week. Stay tuned for when my sister and I manage to learn the dance and end up youtubing it after too much wine/sugar!

Brisbane Zombie Walk at Supanova 2011

Well Supanova 2011 is finally over and I am exhausted. If you thought attending for two days straight was exhausting, try having a stall there as well as going and getting your geek on. It was intense! We decided to get a booth for the Brisbane Zombie Walk, to help promote it and get some extra funds from donations and selling some merch. We got a lot of registrations and sold all our left over shirts from last years walk as well as the figurines and books we had from some of our sponsors. We’ve already started planning our stall for next year which may involve brain-icing cupcakes to draw in the crowds.

Things I observed over the last two days while surrounded by Brisbane’s biggest nerds:

As a grande finale for the weekend, my sister and I went and got photos with Tom Felton (aka Draco Malfoy from the Harry Potter films). Naturally I was excited because I’ve always had a soft spot for poor Draco and loved how Tom played the character. He was really, really lovely and such a good sport. Basically the scene played like this:

Tom: Hi there.
My Sister: *loud whisper* Show him your tattoo!
Me: Hi! Um, I want to show my tattoo off in our photo *suddenly very starstruck and giggly*
Tom: Oh my god, is that genuine? *strokes my Dark Mark gently*
Me: Yep! *dying on the inside*
Photographer takes a photo, Tom has his hand around me and points at my arm and I try to pout but am overwhelmed with giggles so don’t quite pull of the come-hither look I was aiming for.
Tom: Thanks, lovely.
Me: Thank you! *walks the wrong way, dying some more*

Click the pic for the larger version

All in all it was a great weekend, though I am officially not doing anything zombie-related all week lest I end up strangling someone! I am probably going to be all Tom Felton/Draco Malfoy obsessed instead :D
