Get Moving!

There’s nothing much boring than a person who’s all gung-ho about health and fitness and works out five days a week and actually uses their gym membership on top of exercising at home or going for jogs after work. I say this as one of those people. I used to always sling off at fitness freaks, mutter about how they need to go get a life and think about how much I was looking forward to sitting on the couch, watching TV and eating dinner later that evening while they recovered from an exhausting workout and ate a salad. And then I started exercising to lose weight, realised exercise actually made you feel really, really good and kind of got into it at some stage.

The difference between me and most of the people I see at the gym or when I got for a run is that I don’t get all “fitness jerk” about it. You know the kind of person I mean, they’re obsessed with exercise and make you feel bad because you don’t think about working out every minute of the day. They strut around the gym like they’re gods gift to whatever and flirt with the opposite sex by flexing their enormous muscles or showing off their perky butts by doing squats in the middle of the weights area. God I hate them!

You can love exercise and not be one of those creeps and I highly recommend it. You don’t have to do it for weight loss (though that’s obviously the main reason why people exercise at all) because the other benefits are boundless. Just by adding regular exercise to your weekly routine will improve your health and well being dramatically. I’m not talking about going for a slow half hour walk once a week either, I mean a proper work out where you sweat a lot and hurt at least a little bit the next day. You don’t have to sign up at the gym or get a personal trainer to do this, though I find have a gym membership motivates me since I refuse to waste money so make myself go as often as possible in order to make the membership fee worth it. If you can afford it though, a PT is great to get the ball rolling on your fitness and also teaches you how to exercise the areas you want to target (and then you can just keep it up by yourself). You really just need motivation and and someone to do it with, as nothing kills motivation to exercise faster than having to do it on your own all the time.

If you’re new to the world of frequent exercise I have a few tips to get you started (don’t I always?!):

So I realise I sound like a massive exercise-fanatic-douchebag after writing this BUT regardless, I think people need to get moving more often, if not to lose weight then to get healthy and make yourself live longer and stop being such a lazy jerk. Nothing grinds my goat more than people who whinge about feeling fat when I know they probably haven’t done any half decent exercise since PE in high school. It’s gonna hurt at first and you’ll feel like a massive wanker when you first put on your fancy new gym gear and sprain a muscle in front of fitter, healthier and better looking people than you, but the end will make it ALLLL worth it. Trust me. You can thank me later when you get kick someone’s arse in a race or you have to rescue a damsel in distress or next summer when you fit in your old bikini or favourite dress.

Pretty sure I need this fancy boxing get up ;)

Good advice! I’m going to try out for roller derby soon (fingers crossed) and start yoga or pilates when I’m a bit more financially stable. I can’t wait, I regularly exercised for a short while when I was living in my old apartment and was shocked by how addictive it was!

Good advice seconded! A lot of my friends are under the misapprehension that I’m just “naturally skinny” because what they don’t understand is that I exercise daily and don’t eat rubbish food. Pretty hard to be truly “naturally skinny” without a metabolic disorder. Besides, thin and fit is so much better than thin and not fit!

Funny you write this because I’ve been trying to talk myself into joining the local gym (Jetts). Only problem is I have no one to go with. And they don’t hold class. Booo. But it is considerably cheaper and they don’t lock you into a contact. Not to mention only 3 mins down the road. $100 to join though. EH!

I really do believe having a gym buddy and something fun to go to like classes is what will make going to the gym at least 100% better. Sure Jetts is cheap, but it won't be i you get bored of it and never go. Maybe you need to take up walking/running? Gets you out o the house and into the outdoors and is so relaxing and calming – I love it! Once you get used to exercising, maybe then is the time to join the gym!

I love the term “skinny fat” which I heard mentioned recently. You know those naturally skinny people who eat junk and don't ever exercise who never gain weight, but if you saw them in their undies you'd be appalled at how flabby they actually are. It's super unhealthy! Exercise shouldn't just be about weight loss, it's about health, well being and making our bodies work better and (hopefully) for longer. I'd much rather see a pair of firm, curvy legs in a short skirt than skinny, wobbly ones any day!

Good one! I have my fingers crossed you get into Roller Derby! I am so scared of it, looks so violent and I'd fear for my nails! Haha. Exercise is crazy-addictive and rightly so, our body loves getting it and when it gets the good stuff it wants it all the time. I everyone did do their 30 mins a day, I bet a lot of people would suddenly discover they've been exercise freaks tucked away in lazy bodies!

ah! this comment thing is weird… *came from livejournal* >.>

i couldn't work out for ages because of stupid health problems. but once i figured those out, i'm back into it. i went to biologics lab yesterday (32 brooke st valley) and got some protein and supplements… had a good chat with one of the body builders. he basically told me that cardio is useless to loss fat. it still is good to burn calories but you're not burning the fat… idk how correct this is but they're a hardcore gym so i guess could give them some credit. the most important thing is what you eat really. but to burn fat and create muscle – do weights training 3 times a week. you don't need cardio unless you want to get fit and be able to run marathons. i know this would make most people really angry, but it does have a lot of truth to it – i found i lost the most weight when i was training properly with weights. if i dropped the weights and was doing the cardio, it wasn't as effective, and i lost toning. but if i did the weights and less cardio, i got better results. you don't need to be going to the gym 5-6 times a week to get results… but i agree, it is an addiction and is fun! and makes you feel really good =]. i find it better going with a friend too, because if they are experienced, they can spot you and you can trade tips, and if they are new, you can train them/work on your knowledge.. and i always go harder around other people because i'm a little competitive like that (like i want to prove myself – but in a good way!)… i just started using receipes from here as well http://www.facebook.com/?ref=home#!/RecipesforG… and have found it amazingly useful as i get really bored with my food! i also have digestive problems so alot of the receipes are high in fibre and this is awesome for me … i ended up making 28 muffins yesterday, as well as other receipes. i love the gym.

I have had the cardio vs weights argument with my boyfriend for ages now and I reluctantly have to agree it's probably true. I've only just started doing weights 3 times a week along with all of my normal cardio workouts and while I can't see results yet, I understand how it works and am thinking I'll probably see some results soon. It's a shame because I do so love cardio, why can't it just make me slim and toned???
I also know what you eat is the main part o what makes you lose weight and that's probably where I let myself down the most (as healthy as I am, it's way too easy to slip up when people offer you cupcakes and lollies at work).

yah, i believe it is true! i know heaps of people who do countless amounts of cardio and get minimal results. i've cut down my cardio alot as i get sick too often and am going to focus on my weights more. i just went to this site http://www.mikesfitness.com that sets out meal and weights plans, so it's pretty good when you're running out of ideas! i actually love doing weights… i know not many people do, but i find high intensity cardio sometimes too challenging with my lungs. yes… it is hard to resist! i find that once you've resisted for a while though they stop offering. first they just laugh you off, but then they respect you. i told a new girl i was going to detox for 8 weeks and she was all for it, encouraging etc, the next day i come in in my gym gear and she's like, oh! you're dedicated! me = yeah, i told you, i'm doing a detox… her = oh, i'm used to my friends telling me they are, and then doing nothing.
it sucks that you have to 'prove' yourself to people but i find once you have it's easier. i also get really annoyed at those negative people who put you down and try and tell you you're over doing it or get annoyed when you turn down bad food, basically because they're jealous that you're disciplined. i've actually lost friends over it. but once i proved i was serious and there were serious results, they backed down and realised they were wrong…. society is messed up!
