Thank you. You’re high and mighty preaching just proved my point about people doing this one completely pointless thing just to get attention and show everyone how much they care and how wonderful they are for for “fighting for the cause”. I would also like to reiterate my point that if you do insist on keeping your efforts in the virtual rather than the real world, at least post a useful facebook status, with facts and suggestions.

I work with cancer patients in a local (public) hospital. I spend five days a week getting to know people who are fighting cancer everyday. You should probably know that my attention was first brought to this blog post by a group of patients and their families who also think that putting a colour in your facebook status is completely pointless. One person even said that they found it rude and selfish for someone to use breast cancer awareness in a way that is obviously meant to draw attention to themselves more than any cause. Because it is obvious that for many, if not most, people involved this has simply become a way of seeking attention from all your facebook friends for your supposed social awareness.

So before you start boasting about how wonderful and selfless you are for changing your facebook status to “lime green with pink butterflies” for a day, maybe you should spend a day in your local cancer ward and you might learn a little bit about the thousands of other ways your time might be better spent. Unless it really was only about getting attention?

I tried not to respond to your first comment Gina (as it made me laugh more than anything) but after all that poor spelling/grammar and general lack of intelligence I feel I had to say something. I have had THREE grandparents die from cancer and my remaining grandmother has had one breast removed due to breast cancer. I am all too aware of how serious a matter it is and realise I am going to be suseptible to it when I am older. I find the idea of writing a colour to “raise awareness” in a Facebook status OFFENSIVE because it does shit all for my anyone an just clogs up my Facebook feed.
So don’t come here being all preachy about how much good you’re doing and how cancer has affected your life because it means dick-all to me because I know what it’s like to lose a family member to cancer and I also know what it’s like to have BOTH parents have cancer scare! Go take your damn prayers elsewhere because you’re now starting to clog up my fucking blog.

AS for saying anything about how I choose to help raise awareness or not…really is my business whether you approve or not. I am sorry that you do not know enough women that it was passed on to you so you wouldn’t feel excluded. I have several family members that have dies from cancer and to me any awareness, even a little facebook post, is better than no awareness. Maybe you are the one that has never lost a loved one to cancer. If you had you would certainly agree that ANY AWRENESS is better than none. I feel sorry for you and will keep you in my prayers, as it is obvious that you are in need of them.

For all of you that think a simple stupid fsacebook post cant make a difference… Ladies, the red, black,pink, blue, white, butterflied, cheetah printed, and clear bra colors made the channel 4 SLC news. Facebook doesn’t know who started it going but the Susan B Kolman foundation says it was a great way to raise awareness for breast cancer. Way to go! Post this on your walls and spread the…… word again!!! WTG girls!

Heed my words Gina, some dude on my Facebook said “Hmmm, everyone seems to be posting colours today so I’m just going to post one too”. And he deadset wrote a colour after that. I didn’t know what the colours were about either. So it obviously IS somewhat stupid, pointless and annoying especially when no one knows WHY everyone is posting colours for seemingly no reason on FB.

If it weren’t for Cara’s amusing rant here I still wouldn’t have any idea what the colours were about. So by ranting, Cara is inadvertently ‘raising awareness’ as you call it. So you can’t get mad at her for that can you?

Gina, I find it almost impossible to believe that this is the only way you can show your support… maybe the only way you want to, or the only way you can be bothered to, but not the only way you can. There are hundreds of ways you could actually do something to help, many of them requiring only a small sacrifice of time or money. If you can’t manage that then you obviously don’t care that much. Which is fine, you can’t feel strongly about every cause going. The point is, don’t pretend to give a damn when you don’t. And if you do, do something worthwhile.

And if you really, honestly can’t possible spare any time or money to do something, you could at least create a less pointless status. Instead of “pink and white with polka-dots!” which does nothing except confuse and piss off most other facebook users, you could take a few seconds to actually think about it. You could post something that gives useful information about cancer, and that provides suggestions to your friends about how they could do something that actually makes a difference.

I cant believe you are so upset over this. Maybe you need to quit bitching about what every one else is doing and do something yourself. So what if someone wants to show their support by having a facebook post…what does it matter to you. Other than of course to give you another reason to bitch and complain about what every one else is doing or not doing. You talk about people like me that show our support the only way I can at this time..even if it is something as small as a facebook post. What does it matter to you. You are a hypocrite…there are many ways to show support. Get over yourself.

Agreed x 100. My current status says “Unless $1,000,000 per update is donated to Breast Cancer awareness I don’t give a fuck what colour bra you’re wearing.”
How people honestly think this is raising awareness, I don’t know. The only way a FB status is going to educate people is if they were to put a fact about cancer.

I don’t think it’s even so much about what cancer you’re supporting, it’s about the fact that you’re really not doing ANYTHING to help. People are taking the easy way out, pretending to care, and then thinking you’re this wonderful person for ‘fighting for the cause’. If you really gave a damn you would be, as Ruby says, donating money, volunteer or doing anything else that actually makes a difference. So don’t act all superior just because you wrote a colour on your facebook page. Get out there and do something, or shut the hell up and stop wasting the time of those people who are actually making a difference!
