Then the day rolls round and either I've got no money, nothing clean to wear, feel too tired or I get anxious about having to be social and talk myself out of going. I've made up long winded excuses in the past too but now I just usually say that I can't make it and leave it at that. You're right though, saying no initially then turning up out of the blue would be so much better!
